“Brandon Woodruff’s $17.5M Brewers Deal”

Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Brandon Woodruff has inked a backloaded $17.5 million, two-year contract with the team, featuring a mutual option for 2026. Despite initial uncertainty after being allowed to explore free agency, Woodruff expressed excitement to continue his journey with the Brewers, citing unfinished business. Catcher Gary Sánchez has also joined the Brewers on a one-year deal, bolstering the team’s lineup with his power hitting.

Woodruff, 31, faces an extended absence due to shoulder surgery, but the contract secures his future with the Brewers. President of Baseball Operations Matt Arnold expressed delight at Woodruff’s return, emphasizing his significance to the franchise. Woodruff’s contract details include a $2.5 million payment for 2024, $5 million for 2025, and a $20 million mutual option for 2026 with a $10 million buyout.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his availability for the upcoming season, Woodruff remains committed to his recovery plan. He will follow medical advice closely, aiming for a return to peak performance in either 2024 or 2025. Woodruff’s veteran leadership is valued by the Brewers, who believe his presence will positively impact the team even if he cannot pitch this season.

In the 2021 season, Woodruff demonstrated his talent with a 2.28 ERA and 74 strikeouts despite missing significant time due to shoulder inflammation. However, a recurrence of the injury before the NL Wild Card Series sidelined him, affecting the Brewers’ postseason performance.

Sánchez, known for his power hitting, adds depth to the Brewers’ lineup, complementing William Contreras, who had an impressive 2023 season. The Brewers have also secured additional catching options with signings like Eric Haase and Austin Nola.

Woodruff’s return signifies continuity for the Brewers, reinforcing their roster with experienced players. Despite challenges posed by injuries, the Brewers are optimistic about their prospects for the upcoming season and beyond.
