Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, enters a guilty plea following the leak of classified documents
Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, pleaded guilty in federal court to leaking highly classified military documents regarding the war in Ukraine and other national security matters. His plea agreement stipulates a prison sentence between 11 and nearly 17 years, with prosecutors seeking the higher end of the range. Teixeira, 22, admitted to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information under the Espionage Act. He shared these secrets via Discord, a social media platform, raising concerns about America’s ability to safeguard sensitive information.
Teixeira’s actions, which occurred within the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base, exposed classified documents and photographs bearing SECRET and TOP SECRET markings. These leaks divulged secret assessments of Russia’s actions in Ukraine and other national security issues, prompting the Pentagon to tighten controls on classified information. Despite warnings from superiors about mishandling classified data, Teixeira continued to leak secrets, even taking notes on intelligence information and sharing them. The Air Force inspector general found that others failed to report Teixeira’s unauthorized activities out of fear of overreaction.
Teixeira’s arrest in April led to his imprisonment, as authorities raised concerns about his history of violent rhetoric and the risk of him being exploited by adversaries. While prosecutors have not revealed a clear motive, members of the Discord group described him as seeking attention rather than aiming to inform the public or influence policy. Despite warnings and confrontations about his actions, Teixeira persisted in leaking information until security officials were finally alerted to the extent of his violations in January 2023. As he awaits sentencing, Teixeira remains in the Air National Guard in an unpaid status, underscoring the gravity of his breaches of national security.
