Jurickson Profar, a free agent, finalized a one-year contract worth $1 million with the San Diego Padres on Saturday. The deal includes the opportunity for the 30-year-old outfielder to earn an extra $1.5 million through performance bonuses tied to plate appearances. San Diego entered spring training with only two outfielders on its 40-man roster: Fernando Tatis Jr. and José Azocar. Profar spent significant time in left field with the Padres from 2020 to 2022, also playing sporadically in other outfield positions as well as in the infield and as a designated hitter.
After declining a $7.5 million player option following the 2022 season, Profar signed a one-year, $7.75 million contract with the Colorado Rockies. However, he was released by the Rockies on August 27th, subsequently signing a minor league deal with the Padres just four days later. During his brief stint with the Padres last season, Profar appeared in 14 games. Despite boasting the third-highest payroll in baseball on opening day at $258 million and making it to the NL Championship Series in 2022, the Padres missed the playoffs.
Profar, a switch-hitter, holds a career batting average of .238 with 87 home runs and 359 RBIs over 10 seasons in the major leagues. In addition to his time with the Padres, he has previously played for the Texas Rangers and the Oakland Athletics.
