Over 30,000 in Ladakh protest for inclusion in 6th Schedule, statehood, MPs & Public Service Commission. Sonam Wangchuk’s fast highlights government’s neglect & corporate interests over environment & welfare.
Ladakh Protests & Demands:
In Ladakh, over 30,000 people gathered recently to protest, which represents more than 10% of the territory’s population. Educator and activist Sonam Wangchuk initiated an indefinite fast when discussions with the government failed. The demands of the protesters include Ladakh’s inclusion in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, full statehood, election of 2 MPs, and establishment of a Public Service Commission.
The 6th Schedule aims to protect tribal populations by allowing them to form Autonomous District Councils and Regional Councils. Ladakh’s vulnerability to climate change and its majority tribal population justify the demand for inclusion in the 6th Schedule. Since Article 370’s abrogation, Ladakh lacks democratic representation, despite BJP’s prior support for its inclusion in the 6th Schedule.

The Modi government’s reluctance to fulfill this demand may stem from losing control over Ladakh’s land and forests. This could prevent corporate exploitation, safeguarding Ladakh’s environment and cultural heritage. Ladakh’s situation reflects broader issues of corporate exploitation and government neglect across the country.
The government’s failure to address Ladakh’s concerns reflects a pattern of prioritizing corporate interests over environmental and social welfare. Protecting places like Ladakh is crucial for preserving India’s natural and cultural diversity.
