Deobra Redden, 30, who attacked Nevada Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas, has been indicted for attempted murder. The grand jury returned a nine-count indictment against him, and his arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 29. The incident occurred on Jan. 3 during Redden’s sentencing for an attempted battery case when he lunged over the bench at Judge Holthus. Courtroom cameras captured the struggle as Holthus’ clerk and a court marshal tried to restrain him. A week later, Judge Holthus sentenced Redden to up to four years in prison for the battery charge he pleaded guilty to in November.
The new indictment accuses Redden of attacking Holthus by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat, and hitting her on the head. He is also accused of punching, kicking, and pushing a Las Vegas police officer. Redden’s foster mother and older sister revealed that he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, court records show he was found competent to stand trial. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated that Redden’s criminal history includes convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, mostly involving violent acts.
