“Running for Change: Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon Set for Feb 20”

The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon, organized by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in collaboration with the Tourism Department and Ladakh administration, will be held on February 20. It’s the second edition of this unique marathon, set at an elevation of nearly 4,350 m above sea level, highlighting the challenges of running on a frozen lake. Sustainability is a key focus, with measures like avoiding plastic water bottles and waste-generating products during the event. The organizers emphasize the unifying power of sports, especially in addressing issues like climate change.

Limited to 50 runners, the marathon welcomes participants of all abilities and aims to showcase the thrill of running on a frozen lake. Similar events globally, like the Icebug Frozen Lake Marathon in Norway, have gained recognition for their adventurous nature. A delegation led by Chamba Tsetan, the founder of ASFL, met with Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor to discuss the marathon’s details.

Officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Highest Frozen Lake Half Marathon, the event seeks to boost winter tourism in Changthang and promote sustainability. Safety measures include a medical team, hot water points at intervals, and ambulance support. Participants are advised to bring essential gear like head torches, warm jackets, and raincoats due to the challenging conditions.

Overall, the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon serves not only as an adventure but also as a platform to raise awareness about climate change’s impact on the Himalayan ecosystem, fostering a spirit of sustainability and global collaboration.
