Max Domi scored the shootout winner as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the New York Rangers 4-3. Toronto, winners of nine of their last 10 games, saw goals from John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander in regulation, while Ilya Samsonov made 32 saves. Vincent Trocheck netted twice, and Alexis Lafreniere had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, who lost for just the second time in 13 games. Artemi Panarin also contributed two assists, and Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots. Domi’s goal in the shootout proved decisive after Mika Zibanejad and Marner traded goals. Trocheck hit the post, sealing Toronto’s victory.
Ilya Lyubushkin, acquired in a three-team trade, returned to the Maple Leafs lineup, despite taking a big hit from Matt Rempe. Calle Jarnkrok also returned from injury, while Timothy Liljegren came back after a two-game absence. Tavares broke the tie in the third period, and Rempe and Ryan Reaves engaged in a fight later in the game. Samsonov made crucial saves late in the game, but Trocheck managed to tie it with just over a minute left. Lafreniere opened the scoring for the Rangers, but Marner and Nylander responded for Toronto.
Rempe and Reaves, the focus of pre-game attention, had a confrontation on the ice. Samsonov made key saves, including on a breakaway by Jimmy Vesey. The game remained tight, with both teams trading goals and chances. Nylander’s goal extended his point streak, setting a franchise record.
