Water Crisis: Igniting Humanity’s Urgent Wake-Up Call

Water Crisis

Just think, you turn on the water tap to drink water but not a drop of water comes out of the water tap. What will happen then? ‘Water is life’ maybe you and I will understand the true meaning of this sentence one day.

The entire Europe including India is facing water crisis today. The main reason for this is ourselves.

As a result of global warming, temperature is continuously rising, glaciers are melting and sea level is rising i.e. the amount of non-potable water is increasing and at the same time the amount of potable water i.e. groundwater is decreasing day by day.

It is true that the day is not far when the whole world will face water shortage. And the price of water will skyrocket.

From 2002 to 2017, NASA conducted a detailed experiment on Earth’s impact on Earth’s climate change, called the ‘Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment‘ (GRACE).

Through these experiments, NASA scientists have well understood that ice and underground water are disappearing from the earth day by day.

In 2009, NASA warned us about a severe water crisis in India’s Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat when normal rainfall was occurring. Imagine what happens when it doesn’t rain normally!!

Causes of water crisis:

Not only is global warming the main cause, but there are several other causes as well which are as follows-

(1) Just like to recharge our phone battery, we need to recharge ground water. Today we have cut trees and built roads and houses as needed. When I come out of the house, I see only cement and cement all around, the open ground is no longer visible. If the rain water reaches the base of the tree, the rain water does not fall on the ground, then how will Groud water recharge!

(2) Today 90% of the water used for agriculture in our country is Ground water. We do not use river or canal water. Because, waste water from factories and sewers falls into rivers or canals. As a result, river or canal water becomes unsuitable for use in cultivated land.

(3) In our country various places like Assam, Bihar, Mumbai, Delhi get flood with heavy rainfall and after some time waterlogging occurs in those areas. Because, we do not try to retain the rain water during rainfall, all the rain water gets mixed with the dirty water of the sewers and becomes polluted.

What we should do in water crisis:

India ranks 120th out of 122 countries with the most polluted water, so all we can do is,

(1) The water tap should be turned off properly after use.

(2) Water after cleaning the house or washing vegetables can be used in the flower garden or after using the toilet.

(3) We should learn to collect rain water and aim to meet our daily needs.

(4) Planting of large number of trees, if trees are felled, new saplings should be planted instead.

(5) Ganga flows through our country and enters Bangladesh as Padma River. The Brahmaputra River flows between India and China. So, not only we have to be careful, but our neighboring countries also have to see that the waste water from the factories is treated well and discharged into the river.

(6) Dumping of various types of plastic waste in rivers and canals should be stopped. So that they can fulfill our needs without becoming a dumping ground.
