New SIM Card Rules to Combat Fraud and Hacking Unveiled for 2024

New SIM Card Rules 2024:

The new SIM card rules are set to roll out nationwide from July 1, 2024 to curb online fraud and hacking, as announced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on March 15, 2024.

Under the new rules, people who have recently swapped their SIM cards cannot port their mobile numbers. This ban on SIM swapping is intended to prevent fraudsters from porting mobile connections immediately after swapping or replacing SIM cards.

SIM swapping, a technique increasingly employed by fraudsters, involves obtaining personal information such as PAN card and Aadhaar details and then acquiring a new SIM card disguised as a lost or damaged card. Subsequently, fraudsters gain unauthorized access to sensitive information, intercepting OTPs intended for victims.

Apart from these rules, TRAI has recommended introducing a service where the name of incoming calls is displayed on the recipient’s handset irrespective of whether the caller’s number is saved in their contact list or not. While this measure has the potential to thwart fraudulent activity, privacy concerns have been raised.
